A community fun day was the apple of everyone’s eye at the weekend to celebrate the humble garden fruit.

The pies and juice were overflowing around Lindley’s centre as 150 people gathered to take part in the area’s second ever Apple Day event.

Hosted by Udders Orchard cider maker David Kendall-Smith and Marie-Claire Micuta, their aim was to promote the ‘myriad’ of possibilities of the foodstuff and remind everyone of where the apples found in supermarkets start their lives.

Talks on how to grow apple trees at home, apple pressing, trails around local shops and an apple bobbing competition got kids both big and small involved and itching to start their own mini orchard.

There were also demonstrations of the dozens of varieties grown in the Huddersfield area, from cider-making varieties like Dabinett to bramley apples perfect for winter desserts and fiestas.

David, said: “It was brilliant day.Not only did it boost everyone’s knowledge but it was great for the community and our local shops, who all came together to make the event a success.”

Now there will be a patient wait before the pressed apples can be used by him to turn into cider.
