A body found in the River Calder in Mirfield on Good Friday has been identified as a missing pensioner.

Detectives have confirmed it was missing Harrogate man George Bass.

His body was spotted in the water by a member of the public walking on the river bank near the John Cotton’s factory on Huddersfield Road at about 3pm last Friday.

Mr Bass, 77, had been missing since Wednesday, March 2.

North Yorkshire Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

Det Insp Bill Burns, said: “Our thoughts are with George’s family and we are doing everything we can to support them at this sad time.

“We would also like to thank the members of the public and the media who have supported the appeal.”

Police have not revealed how Mr Bass’s body ended up in Mirfield.

Mr Bass was reported missing by his wife Irenie and was spotted in Leeds on March 3, having taken the bus there from York and again in a Tesco in York a week later.

His family put out an emotional appeal for his return but there were no further sightings of him.

An inquest will be held to determine the cause of his death.
