A CONMAN showed a false identity card when he called at an 82-year-old woman's home.

The man claimed he was from Yorkshire Water and showed her the card through the window of her Oakes flat at 5.30pm on Thursday.

The victim had just had central heating fitted and thought he must have called about that, so she let him into her home at Bay Close.

The man then went into the kitchen and searched through drawers before stealing cash from her purse.

He was white, aged about 50, about 5ft 7in tall, well-built and spoke with a strong Scottish accent.

He was well-dressed in an overcoat and a trilby hat.

Sgt Tim O'Sullivan, of Huddersfield police, said: "It was coincidental the thief called when he did as his visit tied in with the work that had been going on inside the flat."

He added: "The man is very distinctive in the smart way he was dressed and his strong accent."
