Butchers from Huddersfield proved a cut above the competition at the 25th annual Great Yorkshire Pork Pie, Sausage and Products Competition.

Bolster Moor Farm Shop was again the biggest single prizewinner in the UK’s premier regional meat trades contest, which was held in Bradford and drew about 300 entries.

The shop, which landed a pork pie and sausage supreme championship double in 2012, retained the sausage title at this year’s contest with its first prize traditional thick pork sausage.

Bolster Moor, owned and run by second cousins Simon Haigh and Andrew Whitwam, won all three sausage classes – thought to be a competition first.

The shop’s first prize thin pork sausage was also voted reserve supreme champion sausage while Bolster Moor also landed the speciality sausage class with its pork, cheddar and chive sausage. The farm shop also did well with its pork pies, winning the speciality cold eating pie class with pork and pepperoni pie and finishing third in the small pork pie class. For good measure, Bolster Moor was also presented the third prize black pudding.

The reserve supreme pork pie championship went to the first prize small or traditional pork pie from B&M Collins Butchers in Westgate, Cleckheaton, who received the Willis Hall Cup for Pork Pie Excellence.

Another long-established Cleckheaton butcher, Metcalfes, of North-gate, won the ‘New Kid on the Block’ category for the best newcomer to the contest. The shop finished runner-up in the black pudding class.

Shaun J Fairweather butchers and deli at The Knowl, Mirfield, came third in the pork sausage category and was highly commended for their pork pie, steak pie, thick pork sausage and beefburgers.

Sharlands, of Paddock, was reserve champion in the large pork pie class while William Gill, of Villa Farm Shop at Bradley Bar, was speciality sausage reserve champion with his pork and chorizo sausage.

He was also awarded with two Yorkshire Rose Award Diplomas for both his thin pork sausage and his thick pork sausage when he was listed as a finalist.

William said: “We are delighted with our great results. This is only the second time we have entered the competition and the standards were very high.”
