A woman’s gardening session ended up with bomb disposal experts being sent to her Huddersfield home.

She was working in the back garden of her house on Quarmby Road in Quarmby shortly after 10am today when she unearthed what looked like an old grenade.

She alerted police and officers took a look at what she’d found and decided to call in the army.

A bomb disposal squad was sent from Catterick some 80 miles away and arrived in Quarmby shortly before noon.

The experts fully examined the device and discovered it was a cigarette lighter designed to look like a grenade.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “The army put a cordon around the garden and no-one was evacuated. They took the lighter away with them when they left.”
