A HUDDERSFIELD college was evacuated by a bomb scare.

Pupils and staff at Huddersfield New College were cleared from the campus after a bomb threat was telephoned to the college yesterday morning.

Students and staff waited while West Yorkshire police and fire services investigated the threat.

They were allowed back once emergency services had deemed the call to be a hoax.

The neighbouring Salendine Nook High School campus was not affected.

College vice-principal Helen Smithson said: “The college received a call at 10.42am informing us that there was a bomb in the building.

“We implemented our evacuation procedures and contacted the police, who responded immediately.

“We liaised with the police and fire service to ensure all students and staff were positioned in an area of safety, and continued to liaise with the emergency services to ensure the building was safe for students to return.”

One student, who did not want to be named, said: “We had to wait outside for a while. There were tons of police.”
