Fire crews attended dozens of incidents in the borough on Bonfire night.

The most serious incident for Huddersfield crews was at Moorend Road in Lockwood at 7pm, where a wheelie bin was set alight.

But as it was against the side of a house, and the fire spread to the property, causing damage to the rear window and shattering the glass.

No-one was in the house at the time.

They were also called to an incident in Primrose Hill at 8.30pm, where sparks from a small bonfire spread to nearby garages and started a fire.

Overall, Huddersfield fire crews attended 10 incidents before midnight - the remainder were small incidents connected to bonfire night and involved helping put the fires out.

Dewsbury firefighters managed to save a bedding factory going up in flames - by cutting the roof away.

A crew from the town’s station were called to the Savile Town Industrial Estate where a fire from a nearby skip spread to the factory.

Watch Commander Chris Johnson said: “The building could easily have gone up in flames and burnt down.

“But we broke in and used fans to clear the smoke, which meant we were able to work inside and cut away at the roof to stop the fire spreading to the whole factory.

“I don’t know the cause of the fire, we suspect it came from the skip, which was overflowing with rubbish, but we can’t say for sure what started it.”

Crews from Cleckheaton and Brighouse were called to support their colleagues in Bradford, while Elland firefighters were called to back-up Huddersfield station during Bonfire night.
