HOUSING heroes are being celebrated in a book to mark 20 years of a Kirklees tenants’ group.

A new book, called Heroes, is being released to coincide with the anniversary of the Kirklees Federation of Tenants’ and Residents’ Associations.

It tells a fascinating story of Kirklees people finding their voice, and how it all started with a blocked drain.

Federation chairman Cora Carter said: “It has been lovely to pay tribute to people like Kevin Jordan and Cliff Whiteley, who are sadly no longer with us but who played a huge role in campaigning for improved housing in Kirklees and nationally.

“They really were the heroes in this story.”

Author Andy Selman goes back to the origins of the support group and tells the story of how the late Mr Whiteley complained about a blocked drain.

That complaint led to the federation’s formation, with Mr Whiteley being elected chairman after a rousing speech about repairs.

Mr Selman, from Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing, said KNH had a special relationship with the tenants’ movements, which is highlighted in his book.

He added: “Writing the book has been a real labour of love. Kirklees Council, too, deserves a lot of credit for having the courage to share power with tenants about decisions that affect their homes and lives.”

The 88-page book has been produced as part of the 20th anniversary. It is available at the federation offices, 41 Estate Buildings, Railway Street, Huddersfield, or by calling 01484 223466. It costs £10, or £5 if you are a KNH tenant.
