A BOOK has been written about Gomersal First School to mark the retirement of its headteacher.

Mrs Jan Roberts retires tomorrow after 13 years at the school.

Her husband Bill wrote a book about the school to mark her departure.

Schools Out! A History of Gomersal First School and Its Predecessors traces the school's origins.

It charts the story of the school from its opening in 1912, through the 1930s, the difficult war years and the crowded conditions of post-war schooling.

The last section of the book covers the school's change into a First school.

The book is full of memories of teachers, trips, events and educational changes.

The book, illustrated with drawings and photos, can be bought from the school, the Red House museum at Gomersal or Maycroft Furnishings, at 346, Oxford Road, Gomersal. It costs £4.

The school was staging an open day this evening between 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
