A BAN on boozing in Dewsbury town centre streets is a step closer - and it could be extended to other Kirklees towns if it is branded a success.

Senior councillors will meet next month to approve a pilot scheme.

More no-alcohol zones could be created in other parts of Kirklees after the trial.

Police would be handed power to confiscate alcohol from street drinkers and arrest anyone who failed to comply.

Dewsbury Tory councillor Jonathan Scott said: "We are one step nearer as we have got the council's Cabinet not only to consider no-alcohol zones but to actually put forward proposals for a pilot which will include Dewsbury town centre."

He said the proposal was due to be discussed by the Cabinet in January and, if approved, he hoped the zone would come into effect shortly.

A ban on drinking in Huddersfield town centre streets was considered a dozen years ago, but rejected.

Council leaders at the time said police had sufficient powers under existing laws to deal with any trouble.
