A FAMILY bakery is celebrating 50 years of successful business in Kirklees.

Hadfield’s bakery was formed in 1958 and was bought by the Hodge family in 1959.

Michael Hodge, now 76, expanded the business throughout Yorkshire.

Son, Marcus, 38, of Upper Cumberworth, took over from his dad and now runs the chain of 16 bakeries.

Marcus said: “Being a baker is all I’ve ever done from being a little boy.

“I’ve worked in the factory and loaded the sacks or greasing tins.

“It becomes instilled in you – my dad was a baker and my grandad was a baker in Harrogate.”

Marcus said the business is now very different from how it used to be.

He said: “It’s not just about baking bread anymore, there is so much more now that people want, like cakes and fresh sandwiches.

“We’ve definitely had to modernise over the years and keep up with the times.”
