A boy aged just 10 was chased by a gang of teenagers and hit with sticks and robbed of his mobile phone in Shelley Park.
The boy was left with minor injuries following the attack which happened at 5.15pm on Monday.
He had been walking home along a ginnel behind Westerley Way when he was approached by a group of around seven or eight teenagers.
The gang blocked his path, threatened him and chased him through the park before grabbing him and hitting him with sticks. His mobile phone was stolen.
Det Con Mark Willetts, of Huddersfield CID, said: “This was a nasty attack against a child that happened at a busy time of the day. I would appeal to anyone who saw anything suspicious or unusual to get in touch.
“It is likely that at 5.15pm someone was in the park at the time. Did you see a young boy being chased? Or a large group of male teenagers in the area? If so, please get in touch.”
The youths are all described as white and aged around 16. They were all wearing dark coloured neck scarves which covered most of the lower half of their face. They also wore jeans with holes and rips in.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Det Con Willetts on 01484 436665 or via 101.
