A COUPLE still enjoy visiting Scotland and the Lake District together more than 70 years after they first met.

Herbert, 85, and Jean Mellor, 84, got to know each other in 1939 when they both lived in the Sheepridge area and they have now celebrated their diamond wedding.

The couple, who live at Park Hill, Bradley, married at Woodhouse Church, Sheepridge, and honeymooned in Llandudno.

Over the years they have travelled extensively in Britain and abroad and still get away to Britain’s northern scenic spots as often as they can.

Herbert had his own business in sheet metal and worked until he was 82.

Jean worked as a nursery nurse at Southgate Nursery until her early 60s and then did local voluntary work.

The couple have two sons and a daughter and eight grandchildren. They were recently treated to a surprise party with family members travelling from as far away as Orkney to attend.

Asked what was so special about Herbert, Jean said: “I just liked him.

He was so kind and thoughtful – and he still is.”

And the secret of a long and happy marriage? “It’s give and take,” Jean added: “And sharing everything.”
