A NEW charity shop has opened in Huddersfield to help families buy budget clothing.

Brian Jackson House has just opened a second-hand clothing shop in aid of National Children’s Centres UK.

And with clothes priced between £1 and £4, it is no wonder the Pass It On shop, on New North Parade, was inundated with bargain hunters on their launch day.

Staff at other shops throughout Kirklees regularly receive clothes donations.

But with staff at Brian Jackson House only having a furniture exchange project, there was no outlet for them to be sold.

Now, the organisation has transformed the basement of Brian Jackson House into a clothes shop.

Ruth Duffy, who is a human resources manager at the centre, originally came up with the idea.

She said: “We really wanted to make use of the clothes rather than just recycling them for fabric.

“The aim is not just to raise money for the NCC but to also provide a service for people when times are a little tough.

“We are very cheap and we only have around three items that we are hoping to sell for more than £4.

“The new Pass It On shop sells affordable clothes for everybody feeling the pinch.

“We will no doubt get visits from people who use the Sure Start Centre upstairs as we have a huge amount of baby and children’s clothes.

“The shop has been very busy this morning as word has got around about our bargains.

“The feedback has generally been that people are surprised at how cheap we were.

“We have had lots of kind donations and we were even able to help Save the Children and pass on two bin-bags to them.”

Hangers and posters were donated to the shop from both Matalan and Johnson’s Cleaners.

With baskets brimming with baby clothes and shelving units lined with tiny shoes, it is set to become a popular spot with parents.

Ruth and volunteer co-ordinator, Kelle Myers, are overseeing the shop but it will be run entirely by volunteers.

Marsha Simpson applied to volunteer through another Pass It On shop.

The shop will be open from 10am to 2pm Tuesday to Friday and closed on Mondays for re-stocking.

Kelle said she was delighted with the turn-out.

She said: “It has been all over Twitter and people have spread the word very quickly.

“Donations and volunteers are always appreciated. I realise we are a little out of the way, being at the top of town, but we hope that we are cheaper than the rest.

“We are definitely worth a visit.”
