A MAN who fell to his death from a landmark M62 bridge was a mechanic from Calderdale.

Jack Michael Binns, 56, was killed instantly when he fell from the Brown Cow bridge at Scammonden early on Wednesday morning.

Several horrified drivers saw him fall about 150ft from the bridge and land in the central reservation at 8.40am .

Police found his car nearby.

Mr Binns, a divorced man, lived in Shelf, Halifax, and worked as an engineer at VTL Automotive at Luddendenfoot.

The company makes parts for vehicle transmission systems.

A spokeswoman for the company said: "This has come as a terrible shock to everyone here.

"Jack was a quiet, conscientious worker who had been with us for seven years."

The motorway was shut in both directions until lunchtime while police investigated the circumstances surrounding Mr Binns' fall.

It reopened after officers were satisfied there were no suspicious circumstances.

The closure sparked huge traffic hold-ups on surrounding roads.

An inquest will open after Christmas.
