Miserable weather didn’t stop the crowds pouring into an annual fundraising event.

Around 10,000 people braved the showers to head to Brighouse Charity Gala at the weekend.

And 40 good causes are set to receive a welcome boost thanks to the event in Wellholme Park.

The festivities kicked off with the popular parade to the gala site.

The procession, which featured carnival queen Paige Roderick and her attendant Charlotte How, didn’t run quite as smoothly as in previous years.

Because of the wet weather the vehicles were unable to get into the field.

Instead they had to be parked on Bradford Road and participants had to walk in.

The fun in the park continued with star attraction the Tigers Junior Motorcycle display team, who wowed their audience as they jumped through hoops of fire.

Other performers in the main arena included the Diamond Gymnastic display team and the Brighouse Star Twirlers majorette troop.

Further highlights were a dog show, mini go-karts, model railway and donkey rides, a shooting range and a fairground.

The final event of the day was the gala Duck Race which was organised by the YMCA.

The family of Andrew Taylforth, who helped run the gala for over 30 years and died last December, sponsored the prize money for the floats in the procession in his memory.

Ground chairman Peter Edwards said: “We had a bit of problem getting the vehicles into the field because it was wet.

“But a couple of years ago we had a shower just as the procession was coming in so we were OK this time.

“We had a queue of people coming from over the bridge and we hope to have got 10,000 through.

“It’s the 49th year and it’s a tradition that everyone comes down to the gala - it’s one of the highlights of the year in Brighouse.

“We’ve had around 40 charities working from here and this becomes their main focal point for raising money in the year.”
