A FOLK singer is set to spark Olympic fever as the torch arrives in his hometown this weekend.
Roger Davies has penned a tribute to all the torchbearers called Carry That Fire.
He will perform the upbeat tune in the town centre on Saturday with backing from Brighouse and Rastrick Band.
The popular musician was asked to write the song by BBC Radio Leeds and will be previewing it to listeners during his weekly slot on the Andrew Edwards show, today at 3.30pm.
Roger, who is famed for his locally themed tunes, including, ‘Brighouse on Saturday Night’ and ‘Huddersfield Town’, said: “The producer asked me if it was my intention to write something. I said it wasn’t but it is now.
“It’s just a little short song that will lend itself well to the broadcast.
“It only took me about an hour to write, once you get the chorus done you’re there.”
Roger, who began to draw upon his love of Yorkshire as the inspiration for his songs while living in Brighton, said he wasn’t a big sports fan but felt the fever around the London Olympics was justified.
“It’s just an opportunity for the community to get together,” he said.
“Whether you like sport or not it’s something positive and it’s nice to be able to make a contribution to it all with this little song.”
Don’t stop now ‘till we get the job done
Running around West Yorkshire in the hot sun
All the way from Skipton to Keighley, Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford and Ilkley
Everywhere from the valley to the hill tops
If every town from the market to the mill shops
There’s people standing in the streets just to see it, hear it, be near it, cheering for it now
So let’s carry that fire
Light that spark
Carry this flame
Through the dark
In our hands and in our hearts
All the way home
Don’t stop now ’till we get the race run
All the way from Yorkshire to London
This’ll happen maybe once in a lifetime
So here we go, yes we know it’s the right time
Somebody’s wildest dream’s gonna come true
Everywhere you look you see the red, white and blue
The world’s watching in anticipation
So let’s hear it for this great nation now …
