Young footballers held a minute’s silence in memory of their friend who was killed in a road accident on her 16th birthday.

Brighouse Juniors A observed a one-minute silence yesterday to honour their school friend Caitlin Thaxter.

And the school will be open this afternoon for Year 11 pupils to go in and remember Caitlin even though it is a teacher training day.

The Brighouse High School pupil was killed on her 16th birthday while on holiday in Scotland.

A car in which she was travelling veered off a road three miles east of Inveraray, Argyll, west Scotland.

The tragedy happened on a bend on the A83 , near Dunderave Castle, at around 11.15am on October 26.

Following the silence, members of Brighouse Juniors, many of whom attend Brighouse High School, dedicated a minute of applause to Caitlin.

Brighouse Juniors wore black arm bands for the home game against Linthwaite FC.

The match was also attended by members of Brighouse Juniors B and other pupils from Brighouse High School.

Team manager Chris Pickles said: “There’s been a lot of Caitlin’s friends here today.

“We have 16 players in the squad that attend the same school.

“Obviously it’s very sad but it’s nice for them to all come together and bond and support each other.

“The silence and black arm bands were requested by the players. They wanted to make it special for today.”

Brighouse High School will open especially today for Caitlin’s Year 11 school friends.

Headteacher Liz Cresswell said many friends had called into school during the half-term break last week to leave photographs, letters and cards.

“We have invited all of Year 11 to come into school on Monday afternoon so that they can meet together and share memories of Caitlin,” she said.

“We will also offer them support and advice in advance of their official return to school on Tuesday.”

She added that staff and pupils are struggling to come to terms with the loss of the popular Caitlin.

“Her loss is felt throughout the school community,” said Mrs Cresswell.

“We have been touched by the many messages of sympathy and support received and have been in regular contact with the family.”
