A 25-year-old man who armed himself with a knife during a violent disturbance at a house in Brighouse has been banned from contacting his partner.

Gary Clarke, who has been remanded in custody since the incident on April 13, was yesterday made the subject of a two-year community order after he admitted offences of common assault and affray, but Judge Jonathan Rose also imposed a restraining order which means he can only contact his partner, Irene, through a solicitor.

The judge was told that Clarke, of Crowtree Park, Brighouse, now planned to move down to the Kent area following his release from custody.

Prosecutor James Bourne-Arton told Bradford Crown Court how Clarke had been drinking alcohol before an argument with his partner escalated into violence.

The court heard that Clarke picked up a kitchen knife and waved it towards his partner and Mr Bourne-Arton said at one stage the complainant thought he was going to stab her.

Clarke’s father Peter rang the police, but as he was making the call in the kitchen his son knocked the phone from his hand.

While his father was on the floor Clarke kicked out at him and swore at him.

Mr Clarke was also punched by his son after he got back to his feet.

When police arrived at the house Clarke made threats to go “psycho” if anyone came in.

Following his arrest Clarke said he would have to be kept in the cells or he would break his father’s neck.

Clarke pleaded guilty to assaulting both his partner and his father and a charge of affray arising out the disturbance.

As part of the community order he will be supervised by the probation service for two years and he must also do 150 hours unpaid work.

Judge Rose said the offence were extremely serious of their type, but after reading reports on Clarke he was satisfied that the defendant was unwell at the time.
