Developer confident despite housing market concerns

ESTABLISHED building company SB Homes is predicting a bright future – despite current fears around the housing market.

The Marsden-based developer, which has been in business for more than 20 years, is confident the market will recover from current concerns caused by the global credit crunch.

SB Homes managing director, Steve Byram, said he was optimistic about the future.

He said: “These trends come in cycles – but good quality houses in great locations will always be sought after.

“Every few years there are concerns we are heading for a slowdown, but inevitably things calm down and the market picks up.

“You have to stick it out and get on with it.”

SB Homes’ previous developments have included Clough Lee, The Green, Millwright, Deer Hill and Packhorse Court in Marsden.

The company has now drawn up proposals for a new £7m housing development in Slaithwaite.

More than 60 flats and houses will be built on the Empire Works and old bank site at Howgate Road if the plans get the go-ahead.

Mr Byram said: “We believe the planning application provides the basis for a high quality, sustainable development – in keeping with the projects we have undertaken in the past.

“The regeneration of what is a derelict brown field site is bound to benefit Slaithwaite economically through increased custom for local businesses and trades.”

The plans would take place in two phases. The first would see 22 houses and seven apartments built. A further 36 houses would be built in phase two.

As well as the Canal Side development in Slaithwaite, the company is planning a further development in Marsden called the Coach House.

Mr Byram said: “Since the beginning, the company has grown to employ more than 30 tradesmen and office staff, with key staff including our own design team operating from our offices at Brougham Road.

“The majority of our staff live locally and understand the needs of this unique valley and community. This helps in maintaining traditional building techniques while integrating modern styles and ideas.

“Many local clubs, schools and associations have benefited from links formed with the company in recent years and this is something we are keen to see continue.”
