There is no doubt Chloe Knapton has endured the year from hell.

The vivacious young woman from Holmfirth had her face and her confidence shattered in a terrifying street attack after a night out with a friend.

And months later, the physical and mental scars have yet to be mended.

But the 21-year-old is determined to make 2016 a far better year.

Chloe has signed up to be a full-time dance teacher in Holmfirth, working with children, and has also started rehearsals for an on-stage appearance in the hit musical Flashdance at Huddersfield’s Lawrence Batley Theatre.

But she admits she has had to put on hold her ambition of becoming a dancer with a cruise line.

“I don’t have the confidence I had before the attack”, said Chloe.

“I have been out on nights out with friends and find myself crying and upset for no obvious reason.

“I also don’t like to be away from home for too long and worry about what could happen”.

Chloe had to undergo weeks of medical treatment after she was left a bloody mess by bottle attacker Andrew Shires.

Shires, 37, attacked her in a drunken rage, throwing a bottle through her car window in Netherthong on April 16.

Chloe was hoping to pursue a career as a professional dancer but that ended when she suffered deep cuts to her face, neck and shoulder.

A doctor said two pieces of glass which became embedded in her throat were only millimetres away from being life threatening. She also had to have plastic surgery to a deep cut in her shoulder and dental treatment after a tooth was knocked out.

She was at Leeds Crown Court to see Shires sentenced for unlawfully wounding her.

But after he was given a 12-month prison sentenced, suspended for 12 months with a 30-day activity requirement and 200 hours unpaid work, she said: “I don’t feel I have had justice at all. I have to live with this for the rest of my life.”

Now Chloe is determined to put the horrors of 2015 behind her.

“It has been a year from Hell, the worst of my life.

“I was a very positive person but the injuries left me very worried about everything. I have gone out and burst into tears for no reason.

“I had this dream of dancing on cruise ships but I’m worried about what could happen. I never gave much thought to all those stories about what happens to people working away but then I never imagined the attack would happen.

“But on a positive note I have no signed a new contract with KT Dance Academy and I’m going to manage the Holmfirth centre, running dance lessons six days a week.

“I have done a few corporate shows with dance friends and I have also been asked by Woodhouse Amaterus to appear as a dancer in Flashdance at the LBT in February. Rehearsals are under way and it’s going well.

“Physically, I still have to have more dental work on my tooth, which has a temporary cap on it, and the scars on my neck still hurt. I’m told that’s part of the healing process but it is irritating.

“It’s a shame I go into the New Year with work still to do but I want to make it a good year”.
