A cake designer has been named among the country’s best after less than three years in business.

Oliver Schofield won the best wedding cake designed at the I Do magazine awards – with his customers feedback helping make him a winner.

The win is even more remarkable as his cake making business, known as Oliver James Sugarcraft, was only set up two and a half years ago.

Oliver, of Brockholes, said: “To win at the 2015 wedding awards for my work is just amazing.

“Customers had a say in who won so it’s even more amazing that the people who tasted my cakes rated them so highly.

“I set the business up two and a half years ago and am loving it. A new business can be a struggle to start with but I’ve got orders in the book now until next November and can still manage more.”

Oliver, married to Katie, formed the business after leaving his old job after 20 years when he was diagnosed with ME.

He didn’t let his diagnosis hold him back and learnt the basics of business and honed his cake-making and design skills.

He added: “Every day brings something new to learn, new techniques and new flavours as well as creating new designs.

“One of the most challenging was an upside down wedding cake, which hangs up. It was quite technical to put together but looks great.

“And it’s great to get a theme to design to, one couple were big Halloween fans and their wants pumpkins and spiders on their wedding cake rather than flowers.”
