A museum deserves investment, a councillor has said.

Kirklees Council’s future spending plans for the Tolson Memorial Museum, Ravensknowle Park, were raised once again at last night’s Full Council.

Clr Phil Scott, Almondbury Liberal Democrat questioned whether the council’s Cabinet spend of £21,000 on the museum’s boiler in 2012/13 was “well spent considering that the boiler has since completely failed and now required replacing”.

Clr Scott also said £155,000 had been spent on a feasibility study and lead roof repairs at the museum after theft and questioned if all the lead had been replaced properly.

Clr Scott, a Friend of Tolson Museum, also urged Cabinet colleagues to tell him if there were investment plans for the museum considering the “sheer scale” of repair need.

Clr Shabir Pandor, Cabinet member for Resources, said the £21,000 was a temporary solution as a replacement boiler could cost in excess of £200,000.

“Not all of the lead was replaced, we were able to get planning permission for the heritage planning authority to replace some with other materials of the same standard as lead.”

Clr David Sheard said he believed Clr Scott was asking for “magic bean money”.
