Retail giant Lidl has hit snags in their plans to open a Holmfirth store.

Various construction problems have delayed work on the site of the planned store off Huddersfield Road.

And the supermarket chain now says it will be summer 2014 before the new shop will be ready.

The German supermarket firm Lidl revealed in September 2011 that it hoped to build a 1,000-square metre store near Holmfirth.

The retailer earmarked the Riverholme Works site which was then occupied by Sicame Electrical Developments on Huddersfield Road.

The electrical company has moved to a site on Leeds Road in Huddersfield.

The supermarket said they had also considered the impact of the environment, carrying out a full ecology report. They promised to retain “the majority of trees on site” and provide bat boxes within the building.

The plans showed two motorcycle parking spaces as well as 65 car parking spaces.

Lidl said the new store would be classed as a ‘community foodstore’ and it will create between 20 and 25 full and part-time jobs.

They moved on to the site many months ago but local residents have been puzzled about the apparent lack of activity, following the demolition of parts of the former workshops.

A Lidl spokesman said: “The build has been delayed.

“The demolition of the site has taken longer than initially planned due to the extensive foundations underlying the former mill; however all works have now been completed.

“Post demolition works have been ongoing to replace the underground culvert, which bisects the site, in accordance with the Environment Agency’s requirements. This work has now been completed.

“While not visible, as the new culvert has now been backfilled, this has necessitated significant work and investment on the part of Lidl UK.

“We are now in discussions to appoint a principle contractor for the main build, and we would anticipate being in a position to do this within the next four to six weeks.

“We will be able to issue more information once the principle contractor has been appointed.

“Due to the above, the store’s opening is now planned for summer 2014.”
