Burglars target Post Office in Almondbury in 4am raid

They tried to access ATM cash machine but were unable to break into safe

Burglars attempted to rob an ATM cash machine at the Post Office in Almondbury this morning.

Police are now investigating the raid and have appealed for witnesses.

Det Insp Stef Wiseman, of Huddersfield CID, said the audacious break-in took place at 4am in Town End.

She said: “Initially they tried to get at the machine from the outside and damaged the screen and keypad.

“Having got nowhere with that they then got into the office through the front door and began trying to access the machine from inside.”

This too proved unsuccessful and the burglars left, possibly in a vehicle. A sledgehammer and carrier bag were left behind.

Det Insp Wiseman added: “We have a couple of witnesses and if there’s anyone who has any information can they please get in touch.”

Post Office owner Ismail Daji, who has been Postmaster in Almondbury for 18 years, said: “I got a call from the alarm people about 4.15am. I live in Batley and came straight over.

“The burglars have caused quite a bit of damage to the front door. There were crowbars, that sort of thing.

“They tried to get into the safe at the back of the ATM but they weren’t able to. We are open as normal despite what has happened.”
