A blaze ripped through a bus depot in Elland.

And now the cause of the late-night blaze is under investigation amid fears it could be suspicious.

At its height, seven single-deck buses were on fire.

More than 20 firefighters from across West Yorkshire were called to the Yorkshire Tiger depot at 11.36pm on Sunday night.

They were alerted by people living near the Lowfields Business Park off Lock View in Elland, when smoke and flames were seen coming from the site.

Yorkshire Tiger - which also has a depot in Waterloo, Huddersfield - runs bus services across West Yorkshire.

A West Yorkshire fire brigade spokesman said: “It was reported as a large vehicle fire and when the first crews arrived, they found that up to seven buses were involved.

“They requested help from other stations and it was made a five-pump incident.

“The crews remained at the scene for several hours”.

At its height, the firefighters tackled the blaze using four large jets and three breathing apparatus sets.

Two crews from Huddersfield along with others from Rastrick, Halifax, Illingworth and Ossett were in attendance.

Thierry Couturier, managing director of Yorkshire Tiger, said: “We confirm that there was a fire at our Elland depot.

“I am pleased to say there were no injuries however, seven buses were destroyed.

“Clearly this incident is under investigation and we are working with the police and the fire service to establish the cause.

“We are also working to ensure we can continue to provide services for our customers by securing additional buses from sister depots. At this stage we are hoping all services will continue to operate uninterrupted.”

Meanwhile, firefighters from Huddersfield fought a blaze which ripped through a trailer parked at Folly Hall.

The articulated trailer was parked up in a layby in Queens Mill Road, Huddersfield.

The fire crews used large jets to put out the blaze.

One eye-witness said: “It looks as though they filled the trailer with water to put out the flames”.

The cause is being investigated.

There have been complaints about trailers and lorries parking up in the road, which is the site of the Hunter Group waste disposal firm.
