A CANINE with a real nose for crime is on the offensive in Kirklees.
And he's being sponsored to do it!
Thanks to Masterfoods who have sponsored him, Ty the German Shepherd is fighting crime in Kirklees along with his handler Pc Jerry White.
The company chose to sponsor 19-month-old Ty after an appeal by West Yorkshire Police earlier in the year.
The Force now has six general purpose dogs sponsored by local businesses
Vince Heslop, site personnel manager for Masterfoods (Complementary Pet Care), of Birstall said: "As a business we recognise a wide range of roles that pets can play in society."
A police spokesman said dogs played a vital support role, particularly assisting with searches for suspects and evidence at the scene of an incident.
They are also used for detaining suspects and controlling public order, including football matches.
Pc White of Kirklees Dog Section said: "I have had Ty since August of last year and began training him two months later.
"He has joined a ready-made family living with us in Brighouse along with our three other dogs."
* At any one time, the Force has at least 50 general purpose dogs, in addition to about 20 drugs dogs and several dogs for sniffing out explosives.
* Dogs undertake a 13-week training course.
