A VINTAGE look sign has been unveiled at a top Huddersfield business.

Businessman Charles Jones, said he wanted to buck the trend of garish neon signs.

With the support of the Huddersfield Civic Society he commissioned a retro sign for the exterior of his St Peter’s Street steel trading business, Jones Steel.

And Mr Jones said he wanted more local companies to follow his lead and get rid of their dazzling plastic and neon signs.

The sign was also created to celebrate a recent office revamp.

He said: “It was nice to put a final seal on things and improve the look of the street at the same time.

“It would be great if other firms in the town wanted to follow suit with their own old fashioned signs like this.

“It’s nice to get rid of these nasty plastic ones and go back to the old fashioned ones.

“Huddersfield is a very ancient town, if we can do a little bit to help things that’s what we like to do.”

The sign was designed by two graphic arts students from Huddersfield University and made by Primrose Hill based company Signs Express.

The students, James Bornshin and Tom Holton, formed their own company, 72 Graphic Design, as part of their year out from their course.
