FIRE crews in Huddersfield and across West Yorkshire had a hectic bonfire weekend.

In total, crews were called out to 437 incidents between 6pm on Saturday and 8am on Sunday.

And last night, they answered 480 calls between 6pm and midnight - six times the normal amount.

A lit firework was shoved through the letterbox at an elderly woman's home on Tom lane in Crosland Moor at 8.50pm last night which scorched a new carpet and filled the porch with smoke.

Watch Manager Tony Bateman, of Huddersfield fire station, said: "It left her deeply distressed and she now feels she can't be alone any more at this time year."

A bonfire built too close to a house on Greenwood Road, Primrose Hill, had to be doused by fire crews at 7pm.

A shed was destroyed by fire on Reinwood Road in Oakes at 7.30 last night.

Small fires accounted for many of the calls - including bonfires - but there were a number of house fires and fires in other types of building.

At several incidents in other parts of West Yorkshire, firefighters came under attack from youths throwing stones, but no-one was injured.
