A BUSY road is to closed for three weeks for vital repairs.

It will mean long detours for drivers travelling between Meltham and Marsden.

The B6107 Chain Road has to be resurfaced and engineers will need to close the road starting from Saturday, September 20.

Almost two miles of worn-out road is to be resurfaced between Marsden and Varley Road.

The work should take about three weeks weather permitting and will start at the Manchester Road end.

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: “A series of road closures will be used to enable the work to be done safely and quickly.

“There will be no through route between Manchester Road and Varley Road before 7pm in the evenings whilst the work is in progress.

“The official diversion route will be via Manchester Road towards Huddersfield, taking St Thomas’ Road, then the A616 through Lockwood and the B6108 Meltham Road/ Huddersfield Road to Meltham.”

Access to Chain Road from all side roads along the section will occasionally be restricted. Local residents will be kept informed of developments, and traffic signs will appear at the points of the closures to warn road users in advance of these closures.

Drivers are asked to leave extra time for their journeys.

Work to improve the highway drainage and footways has been carried out over several months and the final road resurfacing work will see the end of the £700,000 maintenance scheme.
