IT’S certainly a busy time down on the farm.

Staff at Cannon Hall Farm have had their hands full with new arrivals – with dozens of baby animals born on Valentine’s Day alone!

On the most romantic day of the year, an impressive tally of 11 piglets, seven lambs and two calves were born.

And the births of the two little versions of Highland cattle breeds – famed for their huge horns and shaggy coats – were extra special.

Their proud mums are a mother and daughter duo.

Managing director Robert Nicholson said: “It was lovely because the two became a grandmother and mother at the same time.

“There were so many animals being born that when we came out at 6.30am we didn’t know which pen to attend to first!

“We have a competition on Facebook to name them and we’ve had Romeo and Juliet suggested – there will probably be a Valentine’s theme to them.”

The February half-term is traditionally a busy week at the Cawthorne farm, with at least 100 sheep expected to give birth over the next few weeks.

Other activities taking place at the farm include a birds of prey display and feedings of the larger animals.

Mr Nicholson added: “We try and give families every chance of seeing animals being born during this time.

“We try and plan the births, but rarely does it work so well!”

The farm’s competition to name the calves which is currently running on its Facebook page gives entrants the chance to win a family day ticket.
