It created something of a buzz when a new road name was to exclude its historic connection.

And it will now be up to councillors to decide if 12 new houses in Mirfield should be on a road named after the Wasps Nest.

Councillors and local historians wanted to name the new street after the pub and the centuries-old name for that part of town but the idea was rebuffed by the developer who felt it might not be commercially viable.

But community leaders and Mirfield Town councillors were stung by the Wasps Nest snub for the development on the site of the former pub on Nab Lane and Farrar Avenue in Mirfield.

And on Tuesday the Dewsbury and Mirfield District Committee will decide which of the following will be the new road’s name: Honey Bee Drive, Honey Pot Lane, Nail Maker Close, Wasp Nest Court, Wasps Nest Close, Honey Close, Fairfax Road, Farrar Grove, Kings Head Court, Heathfield Court, Beaumont Court and Lindley Court.

The developer’s preferred name is Honey Bee Drive, but Mirfield Town councillors want to “preserve heritage”.

There are certainly some unusual street names in Kirklees:

The Committee report says: “Historic information shows that the original site was a row of cottages and residents were notorious for their bad behaviour, hence it was called a ‘Wasps Nest’.

“The developer attended a meeting of Mirfield Town Council on 25 November 2014 but ultimately an agreement could not be reached.”

And if community leaders continue to be unhappy with the decision made by councillors on Tuesday, they have the right to appeal to magistrates, although the one appeal that Kirklees has found was in support of the developer.

The public meeting takes place at Trinity Methodist Church at 5pm. The Police Crime Commissioner will attend to talk about local policing matters, plus there will be local budget setting and an open forum for residents to ask questions.
