STREET cafes could soon be set up in Lower King Street, Huddersfield.

The area has become a social hub for the town over the past year, thanks to the opening of many new bars, cafes and shops.

Now, Kirklees Council licensing officers have joined forces with several bars and cafes in the area to try to create a lively `street cafe' atmosphere.

Bars Yates' Wine Lodge, Lloyds No 1 and Zephyr and cafe Eats have all applied to Kirklees Council Licensing and Safety Committee for permission to put tables and chairs outside their premises.

The committee will decide whether or not to approve the applications in principle when it meets on May 24.

If permission is granted, the businesses will then have to apply for planning permission.

Kevin Kendall, head of licensing for Kirklees Council, said: "Our department and the businesses both want to see it go ahead.

"The idea is to create vibrancy in the Lower King Street area."

He said talks are being held with town centre managers and the council's environment and transport department about ideas for further improving the area.

He added: "If the licensing committee approve the idea in principle, we will then have to talk to the Kingsgate centre and other King Street businesses about what the best way forward is. They are all stakeholders. Everyone will be consulted."
