COUNCILLORS are planning how to cut carbon emissions.

Calderdale Council’s Economy and Environment Scrutiny Panel meets tomorrow night to come up with a blueprint.

From April 2011, councils which don’t reduce their emissions will be fined by the Government.

Panel chairman Clr Amanda Byrne wants Calderdale to become greener.

The Sowerby Bridge Conservative said: “Carbon reduction is one of the biggest issues we need to address. Because of all the initiatives and ideas locally, nationally and internationally, we feel it is important to have a serious and detailed review of what Calderdale is doing and what more we can do in the future.

“We want to look not just at what the council can do, but how we can help, inform and influence people who live and work in the borough to reduce carbon, save money and start making money on their energy use.

“We want to look at all the available information; who is doing things well; where we can learn from others; talk to people with an interest and look at how things could be funded in these tough economic times.”

The panel will meet at 6pm tomorrow at Halifax Town Hall. Members of the public are welcome to attend.
