PROTECTING services for an ageing population will be a priority, a top Calderdale councillor has pledged.

As people live longer their need for care increases and it’s felt in Calderdale like anywhere else.

Calderdale Council leader Clr Tim Swift says adult services and children’s services are two of their four priorities.

“What we are trying to do is understand a bit better what older people’s expectations are,’’ he said.

“The number of adults and young people with learning disabilities we see is increasing.

“We are working with community organisations to make sure the support networks are there. I believe keeping people active in their community is key.

“If they stay fit and healthy and have a good social life then it means that they are less likely to need care.

“It is about the council putting in place the fundamentals of care by helping the community to support others.”

Asked if that meant relying on voluntary organisations Clr Swift added: “Many people who need care in their homes get it from family, friends and neighbours already so the volunteer aspect is already there.

“I think this is about making sure we are helping people to maintain their healthy lifestyles for as long as possible and then provide the care when it’s really needed.”

Work within the children’s services is also a priority – the council was issued an improvement notice where its work with vulnerable children is concerned.

Clr Swift said its improvements were not about getting a gold star from the government, but about improving the service.

“We were given the notice 18 months ago now telling us we needed to make improvements in safeguarding,” he said.

“We are improving and we are listening to the experiences of staff and the looked after children.

“It is an area identified as a weakness and it is one we are all determined to improve.”
