INSPECTORS hunting out ‘host cities’ for the 2013 Rugby League World Cup are coming to Calderdale.

Calderdale Council has co-ordinated a bid which offers match venues, team training sites and team accommodation across the district – alongside a rugby league development programme to provide a lasting legacy for the sport.

The 10 consortium members also include Halifax RLFC, Calderdale College, Calderdale Community Coaching Trust, Holiday Inn, Cedar Court Hotels and Waterfont Lodge Hotel, who are working together to provide a range of options for hosting matches, team training facilities and accommodation facilities.

The inspectors from the Rugby Football League will make site visits to the Shay Stadium, Spring Hall Sports Facility, the Holiday Inn and Waterfront Lodge in Brighouse and the Cedar Court Hotel at Ainley Top.

Inspectors have already been to visit Huddersfield’s Galpharm Stadium.

The consortium developing the bid will use the feedback from the visit to improve the full application before it is submitted in mid-July. The outcome of the application process will be announced in the autumn.

The 2013 Rugby League World Cup kicks off in October, 2013, with 14 competing nations from across the globe playing in 28 World Cup matches.

The competition is being billed as part of the UK’s Golden Decade of Sport, which will also feature the 2012 Olympic Games, the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the 2015 Rugby Union World Cup.
