COUNCIl tax could be frozen in Calderdale for the coming year.

Budget talks have started but the tax freeze is top of the “wish list” for councillors trying to meet cutbacks in Government spending.

The Council’s Cabinet says it will continue to work to preserve front line services for the people who need them most.

Councillors claim the draft budget for 2012/13 to 2014/15 has been put together against a background of substantial reduction in funding from central government; increased demand for services from vulnerable people, especially for adults with learning disabilities; and concerns about children in need of care and protection.

Council leader Clr Janet Battye said the proposals continue to reflect the concerns of local people.

“When we were setting the Budget for last year, local people made it quite clear that what they wanted to see was services maintained for our most vulnerable people.

“They told us that in order for that to happen, they were willing to see small increases in existing charges and the introduction of charges for some other services.

“We have received the same message from residents this year and our Draft Budget reflects their views.”

The proposals include:

A freeze on council tax levels for 2012/13

An additional £500,000 to protect front line services for vulnerable adults

An additional £2.5m for services for looked after children

The council estimates it needs to find savings of £3.4m in 2013/14 and £13m in 2014/15.

The proposals approved by Cabinet will now be subject to a public consultation process before they are finally discussed at by the council at its budget meeting on February 27.

There are public forums planned at several locations including Brighouse High School on January 23 (6pm).
