COUNCILLORS are to discuss plans to stop customers getting caught short in Calderdale!

Members of the council will talk through a report on the state of 29 public toilets across the borough on April 8.

They will also discuss proposals to open more loos across the borough through a community toilet scheme.

The scheme, pioneered in Richmond borough, London, is where businesses, such as shops, cafes and restaurants, open their lavatories for public use in the hope of attracting extra trade.

Calderdale officers have already discussed with their Richmond counterparts how to operate a similar scheme in West Yorkshire.

The report also looks into how public toilets can be funded by or built, as part of new commercial developments.

Bob Metcalfe, chair of Calderdale’s health and social care scrutiny panel, said a previous loo review in 2001 had led to fewer but better public conveniences.

Clr Metcalfe said: “Some councils have come up with imaginative ways of providing more public toilets.

“While most of the public toilets in Calderdale have now been refurbished, we will be considering how we would be able to work with local businesses to ensure that there are more public toilets across Calderdale and that people know where they are.”
