SPORTS clubs in Brighouse and Elland are to get a say on facilities.

Calderdale Council is outlining its plans to bring sport to local people.

The Cabinet will discuss the Revised Playing Pitch Strategy when it meets next Monday (April 2).

In 2007 Council approved a Calderdale Open Space Sport and Recreation Study that included a playing pitch strategy, in line with Sport England guidance.

Now the plan is up for revision and the council plans to work with local sports clubs to see how services can be improved.

The strategy covers the following key sports in Calderdale: football, rugby league, rugby union, tennis, cricket and hockey.

Current funding available to the council includes the Protecting Playing Fields Fund, which allows councils to apply for up to £50,000 per round, with a further three rounds still available and potentially more. Without an up to date Playing Pitches Strategy the Council will be unable to access the funding.

Clr Pauline Nash said: “We need to have good quality pitches accessible to local people, if we are to meet the council’s objectives of improving people’s health and wellbeing and increase people’s levels of physical activity.”
