Calderdale is planning to copy Kirklees with rolling road closures for the Tour de Yorkshire.

Both councils have opted for the simple method of closing roads at key junctions when the riders race through on Sunday, May 3.

And both have avoided a repeat of the closure programme last summer necessitated by the huge Tour de France.

There will be parking restrictions implemented by both councils in the run-up to the race, which brings top riders through both Huddersfield and Calderdale on the Sunday afternoon.

A Kirklees spokesman said: “Police motorcycle outriders will ride ahead to close off junctions and stop oncoming traffic. The roads close around 30 minutes before the cyclists are due to pass and open up almost immediately behind them, but this may be longer in areas where there are large crowds.

“The route remains open to traffic at all times, until you are instructed to stop by the police.

“One short section of the route from Slaithwaite to Scapegoat Hill will be totally closed. Clough Road, from its junction with Crimble Bank to its junction with Bolster Moor Road will be totally closed to traffic and parked cars from 10am until 4pm on May 3”.

The riders - including local stars Ed Clancy and Gabz Cillaigh - will reach Denby Dale about 1pm on the day, and race through New Mill (1.09pm), Meltham (1.30pm) and Slaithwaite (1.45pm).

A Calderdale spokesman said: “Visitors and residents are being reminded to plan where they want to watch the race and how to get there, before the race comes through.

“The peloton is expected to reach Calderdale around 2.05pm, racing down Cragg Vale at around 2.35pm and then onto Hebden Bridge King of the Mountain stage, up through Nutclough and Pecket Well before exiting the borough at around 2.50pm.

“The roads open up almost immediately behind them but this may be longer in areas where there are large crowds, so spectators please take care”.
