A multi-million pound waste contract is being put out to tender.

Calderdale is having to re-think its waste collection service after a deal with neighbouring Bradford for a £40m waste depot fell through.

Instead, they will look for a new provider for nine years and companies are now eligible to bid for the contract, even though their contract with current provider SITA runs until 2016.

Clr Barry Collins, Cabinet Member for Economy and Environment, said he wanted a new system to be ‘cost effective and environmentally appropriate’ adding: “This is an issue which affects every household in the borough, so it’s important that we get it right.

“We’re starting this process now, so we can take time assessing all of the information and considering a number of options before making a decision.”

Calderdale is having to re-look at how it will collect waste and recycling after the waste management treatment plant private funding initiative (PFI) project with Bradford Council collapsed last year.

It was expected to be fully operational by 2016 but government funding from DEFRA was withdrawn, leaving both councils looking for other options.

Calderdale was named the best authority for recycling last year having sped up how it collects refuse, with nearly 61% of all waste recycled.

Kirklees recycles around 32% - one of the lowest in Yorkshire.

Calderdale’s procurement process for both is due to begin in September. A Waste Management Member Steering Group be established to support and monitor the process.
