COUNCIL tax in Calderdale is to rise by 4.9% for the next financial year, it was decided last night.

Councillors agreed growth in children and young people's services and care for the most vulnerable adults.

Occupants of benchmark Band D properties will pay £1,291 a year from April - a rise of £60.

The increase includes levies by West Yorkshire police and fire authorities.

The new figure compares with the 5% rise agreed by Kirklees Council last week.

Government ministers have said councils will be capped if they raise council tax beyond 5%.

Capping involves putting legal restrictions on council spending.

Council tax bills in England and Wales will rise by almost twice the rate of inflation in 2006/7, according to the results of a survey published today.

The average 4.5% hike predicted by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) would be higher than the increase seen last year.

But the figure would still represent the second lowest rise in a decade.
