RESIDENTS in parts of Calderdale are to be ‘guinea pigs’ in a new recycling initiative.

People in Hipperholme and Illingworth are to take part in a new trial to recycle Calderdale’s garden waste.

From the end of April, 1,500 properties will help test the new garden waste collection scheme.

The trial will help Calderdale Council and SITA UK establish the amount of green waste being produced by Calderdale residents, and whether the service should be rolled out to the rest of the borough.

The trial collections will take place on a fortnightly basis to the end of September.

Some of the homes have been provided with strong garden waste sacks and others with wheeled bins, to assess different collection methods.

Many people compost their grass clippings and hedge trimmings, but a large amount of garden waste is still thrown into wheelie bins during the summer months.

Items that can be recycled include grass cuttings, leaves, twigs and small branches, hedge clippings, garden plants and weeds.
