HUDDERSFIELD firefighters have raised £1,900 to help colleagues in need and their families.

Crews from Huddersfield fire station have been raising money for the Fire Service Benevolent Fund.

The fund helps serving and retired firefighters who are injured or in need by providing accommodation, rehabilitation therapy and financial support.

It also assists the widows and dependants of firefighters who die in action.

Some of the money raised was donated to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

The Huddersfield firefighters raised the money with a sale at Sainsbury's Shore Head store on Friday.

They sold children's fire helmets and, for parents, the 2007 Red Hot Dates calendar, featuring local firefighters.

One of the calendar stars, 32-year-old Birkby firefighter Des Facey, who is pictured (front) at Sainsbury's with fundraisers and store staff.

Des, a firefighter for four years, and his colleagues also gave out fire safety advice and reminded people to call 0800 587 4536 to get a free home fire safety check.

* The calendar, which costs £5, can be bought through www.westyorksfire.gov.uk and at fire stations throughout the county.
