FAMILIES across Yorkshire and Humberside are facing a ‘housing timebomb’ with just a third of the new homes the region needs being built every year, a new report has warned.

Home Truths: Yorkshire and Humber 2012 reveals there is simply not enough affordable housing to go around.

Across the region house prices have risen 3.5 times faster than earnings in the past decade, more than anywhere else in England.

As a result one out of every eight households in Yorkshire is now stranded on a social housing waiting list, a rise of 81 per cent in the past 10 years.

The National Housing Federation is urging the Government to hand over disused brownfield public land to allow housing associations to build more homes.
