A MESSAGE has gone out to the people of Kirklees: Recycle as much glass as possible.
The plea came as preparations are made for National Glass Recycling Week, which starts next Monday.
Kirklees has the highest glass recycling rate per person in West Yorkshire.
But households still only recycle a third of the 330 glass bottles and jars they use each year.
The council's environmental services staff are urging everyone to recycle their beer and wine bottles and glass food jars in one of the 130 recycling banks across Kirklees.
Bottle banks outside pubs are not just for the pub's use.
Last year nearly 3,000 tonnes of glass were recycled in Kirklees - more than 8m bottles. This saved over 1m kw of energy - enough to drive a car round the world 30 times.
