A FORMER nursery will be bulldozed to make way for car parking.

Councillors yesterday voted to demolish Cambridge Road Nursery to save money and prevent anti-social behaviour.

Parents fought to keep the nursery, off Castlegate, open throughout 2007 and 2008.

But the council’s then-Conservative cabinet decided to close Cambridge Road along with two other Kirklees-run nurseries – Sankofa in Hillhouse and Tiddlywinks in Deighton.

The council’s Labour cabinet yesterday agreed to demolish the vacant building on the 0.6 hectare site.

Burglars have recently stolen copper piping from the site and Kirklees officers fear the nursery will become a magnet for anti-social behaviour if it remains empty.

The council also has to pay £8,000 a year in rates for the vacant building.

Kirklees leader Clr Mehboob Khan believes demolition is the best option.

The Greenhead Labour man said: “The building has recently suffered vandalism. We would also have to pay £8,000 in business rates unless we demolish it.”

The Labour cabinet voted unanimously to knock down the nursery at yesterday’s meeting at Huddersfield Town Hall.

The demolition, which is expected to cost £30,000, will take place this summer.
