A SPEED camera was set on fire in Huddersfield last night.

The camera - on Bradford Road, near the Asda store - was set alight just before 1.30am.

Huddersfield firefighters discovered that rags had been piled on top of the camera.

The rags were then lit and flames spread to the camera's box, which was badly damaged outside.

It is unclear if the inside was affected.

Watch Manager Simon Dennett said the fire was an irresponsible as well as criminal act.

He said: "If we are out extinguishing a speed camera fire we are not available to go to more serious call-outs."
