ROAD safety campaigner Yvonne Hutchinson has launched a community newsletter, Wake Up Ashbrow, after securing cash for a puffin crossing on Bradford Road.

The crossing is due to be installed early this summer.

Yvonne (pictured), from Sheepridge, said: “People need to wake up and believe that they can actually make a difference.

“For more that a decade shoppers took their lives in their hands crossing the busy duel carriageway to get to Asda supermarket, but never thought there was anything they could do about it.

“Local councillors didn’t seem interested either.”

The newsletter gives people a chance to voice their concerns and learn what they can do to make positive changes.

Yvonne added: “I’m already getting some very positive feedback, with people keen to talk about issues in their area.”

Households in Kirklees Council’s Ashbrow ward will receive a copy of the first edition through their letterboxes. A second of three editions will only be available online with paper for distributed to care homes, community centres, shops and cafés.

Yvonne said the newsletter would remain a grass-roots publication, reflecting the voice of residents.

She added: “I want residents to send me their views on the issues that matter to them for the new community website, where copies of the newsletters, events and local views will be posted.”
