A CAMPAIGNING councillor is hopeful a village post office can be saved.
Clr Khizar Iqbal is optimistic that the branch at Thornhill Edge will be spared the axe.
In July, the Post Office confirmed that nine branches in north Kirklees would close.
Savile Town, which had been on the initial hit-list, was given a reprieve. However, neighbouring Thornhill Edge was then added to the list of branches to be axed.
Clr Iqbal believes residents have made a good case to keep the branch open.
The Dewsbury South Conservative said: “After a number of meetings and correspondence with the Post Office I am optimistic that the outcome of the consultation will be positive.
“Our action group has fought hard to keep Thornhill Edge Post Office open and I hope we will be vindicated with good news.”
Clr Iqbal believes the Thornhill Edge branch plays a pivotal role in the life of the village.
He said: “The local post office is a vital community resource that serves some of the most vulnerable people in our community, particularly elderly and disabled residents and young families on low incomes.
“It is essential that this post office remains open, and I am sure once the Post Office have assessed our report and seen for themselves the strength of feeling that exists in the local community that they will do the right thing and common sense will prevail.”
